At 310 Lenox Ave in Harlem, the sidewalk tells as much of a story as the neighborhood itself. This stretch sits at the heart of Harlem’s cultural life, right outside the iconic Red Rooster Harlem, where people gather for food and music, and next to the always-busy M&T Bank branch. But the sidewalk had become more of a barrier than a welcome mat. Roots from a city-owned tree had forced the slabs upward, creating jagged trip hazards. Diners heading to Red Rooster, or locals stopping at the bank, found themselves stepping cautiously or avoiding the block altogether. For businesses that thrive on foot traffic, this was more than a nuisance; it was starting to cut into daily sales.

Sidewalk Replacement & Root Management

The project involved replacing 17 slabs that are severely damaged and lifted unevenly due to tree root growth, covering more than 400 square feet. The biggest challenge was the aggressive tree root system, which had caused the slabs to heave. To resolve this, we worked with a professional arborist, who carefully pruned the invasive roots without compromising the tree’s health. To stop the problem from returning, we installed a root barrier system, ensuring the tree could continue to grow while keeping the sidewalk intact. The slabs were rebuilt with 4000 PSI high-strength concrete, finished with a clean broom texture to match the lively Harlem streetscape.

Permit & Compliance

The work required full DOT permitting and compliance. A sidewalk construction permit was secured for $140, and the entire project followed city regulations. Expansion joints were added to absorb natural ground movement, while slopes were adjusted to meet ADA accessibility standards, ensuring safe access for everyone, from restaurant diners to bank customers.

Commercial Zone Challenges

Harlem’s Lenox Avenue is a high-traffic corridor, and both businesses needed to stay open during construction. We planned the work in stages, maintaining pedestrian flow with barricades and clear signage. By scheduling noisy demolition early in the morning and pouring concrete during off-peak hours, we minimized disruption to diners, bank visitors, and neighborhood foot traffic.

Execution & Efficiency

After the slabs were removed, the sub-base was compacted and leveled, roots managed, and barriers placed. Fresh concrete was poured to NYC specifications, and the finishing provided a clean, cohesive look that fit the lively streetscape of 310 Lenox Ave.

Results

The completed project restored safety and aesthetics to one of Harlem’s busiest blocks. The transformation was amazing.  What was once a hazard is now a safe, inviting path that draws people back to the storefronts.
